It's a New Year and let's start off by helping with Change A Light program! The PUC is looking for more people who want to save money and energy by changing at least one incandescent light bulb in their home or office to an energy efficient model, like a compact fluorescent light (CFL) .

If each South Dakota household changes one light bulb to a CFL, every year we would:

Gov. Rounds declares May as Electrical Safety Month

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds has declared May as Electrical Safety Month in South Dakota. View proclamation.

Gov. Rounds stated in the proclamation that following basic electrical safety precautions can help prevent injury or death to thousands of people each year.

The South Dakota Electrical Commission, in conjunction with the Electrical Safety Foundation International, has the role to promote and educate the public about the importance of respecting electricity. The goal of the Commission for May is to educate homeowners about the proper electrical wiring and permit process.

“South Dakota residents need to understand the electrical permit and inspection process,” said Commission Executive Director J.J. Linn.

Homeowners are not required to be licensed to wire their own residence or farmstead; however, a wiring permit is required. The permit process allows electrical inspectors to make sure homeowners have safe wiring that is in compliance with South Dakota state statute and the 2008 National Electrical Code.

Wiring permits may be purchased from the South Dakota Electrical Commission or your local utility company. For more information, visit http://electrical.sd.gov or call 800.233.7765.

The following is an excerpt from a letter from Steven Hietpas, Ph.d., P.E, SD State University

On behalf of South Dakota State University and the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, I want to thank the SDEC and its membership in their $1000 support towards the purchase of components required to build programmable capacitor banks. The total cost of the project was on the order of $6000.

With these new capacitor banks, the quality of the laboratory exercises has already greatly increased. Students are obtaining better values throughout their laboratory exercises and feel generally pleased with the new capacitor banks.
